Michael Sheridan

Guitars

Michael Sheridan is originally from Melbourne where he started playing during the 70s as a teenager at local rock dances covering the likes of Hendrix and Black Sabbath. After studying jazz guitar with Bruce Clarke for 3 years he moved to Sydney in 1982. He formed the jazz punk outfit Great White Noise influenced by the harmolodic theory of Ornette Coleman and the guitar playing of James “Blood” Ulmer. It was in GWN where his musical relationship began with drummer Tony Buck, saxophonist Sandy Evans and multimedia artist John Gillies. During this period he also performed and recorded with saxophonist Mark Simmonds and free improvisers John Rose, Jim Denley and Rik Rue.

Michael moved back to Melbourne in 1984 to continue musical explorations with the group Trans Waste where the use of extended techniques and preparations were employed to source original and new sounds. His group Mouths created a forum where vocalists could perform with the group in a pre-composed or improvised context. This production was named “All The Voices” co-presented by 3PBS FM. In 1987 Michael recorded as a guitarist for Ollie Olsen, then musical director of the film Dogs In Space. This led to the invitation to join Ollie and Marie Hoy in the pioneering electro/thrash band NO who recorded and played extensively. This ultimately led to the recording of the album titled MAX Q featuring Michael Hutchence singing Olsen’s songs with Sheridan on guitar.

In the early nineties, Sheridan reunited with Tony Buck who had been living and working in Tokyo with noise musicians Otomo Yoshihide and Hideki Kato and formed the band Peril. This group recorded and performed internationally throughout Europe and Asia. In 1994, Michael studied music composition at Sydney Conservatorium where he met Brooke Shelley. Sheridan and Shelley released a track on Sheridan’s Solo Project “Digital Jamming” utilising digital cut up techniques. They continue to collaborate in Resonaxis.

Michael has performed and recorded with many Australian artists such as Ju Ju Space Jazz, The Splinter Orchestra, Monique Brumby, David Bridie, Stephen Cummings, Ross Wilson, Jeff Duff, Max Sharam and others.
